My granny had a magical plant in her backyard, it had little golden tomato like fruits hidden in fragile little husk houses. The French named the fruit ‘Amour en cage’ – love in a cage. We used to carefully pick them, eat the love and arrange the little cages on our fingers. I love how food is connected to memory and these New Zealand Cape Gooseberries transport me back to my Nana’s backyard with the sun filtering through her fruit trees, where we would sit and play amongst the empty gooseberry husks.
